Punta Gallinas and Bahía Hondita

116 kilometers from Cabo de la Vela, the arrival at Punta Gallina and Bahía Hondita lasts approximately 3 hours in summer. In view of the fact that part of the salt bordering Bahía Portete and Bahía Honda (today National Natural Park) is taken as a route. They have an average length of 40 km long and approximately 3 km wide. The road can be considered very regular until the ranchería called Pusheo and Paraíso. But by taking the detour to Punta Gallinas passing through the Dunes of Taroa the road can be cataloged of high difficulty. The road is an irregular path that is easily lost with the landscape.

On the way, you can reach Portete Bay, the old smuggling port sung by the vallenato minstrels. Today abandoned after a massacre of indigenous people carried out by the paramilitary that sought control of the area. This reminds us that La Guajira has not been oblivious to the scourge that plagues the country. But today is a haven of peace with buildings without roof or doors.

Tourism

Tourism to this place can be classified as difficult and adventurous but it is worth it. It is all because the landscapes and natural settings of this region are spectacular and unique in the world.

Among the scenarios that are worth highlighting in Punta Gallina and Bahía Hondita are three hostels on the banks of the cliffs. Vivid orange colors, surrounded by green mangroves, which contrast with a pure blue sky and the green of the bay sea. With an abundance of seagulls, pelicans, frigates, and gannets.

The visit to the Dunes of Taroa is like the obligation to go to Mass on Sundays for Christians. Not to do so is not to have gone to La Guajira. It is magical, its pink and orange sands, meandering forms and altars. It seems as if God had touched the place with his finger and printed his fingerprint on the ground. Walking through the dunes leaving your tracks knowing that in an hour or less the wind will have erased them, it is a very spiritual process. It reminds us how ephemeral we are in this life. And if we want to leave a mark on this world, we must do bigger things than just living.

You should visit Punta Gallinas, the most northern land tip in South America, and feel that the world is born there. That is the gateway of the continent. That beyond the distant and imposing ocean there is nothing, and that everyone else is back. Therefore, you can feel for a moment that you are standing at the head of the world. An indescribable feeling.

Other places to visit

You can also visit Punta Aguja, the Mirado de Kasares, at certain times. Accompanied by marine biologists living in the area you can observe the nesting of sea turtles. At the time of hatching (August-October), accompany the newborn turtles on their way to the sea.

As in Cabo de la Vela, in this area, you can not miss the sunrise and sunset. It is not worth spending a single day, but two or three, because it takes time to understand this little paradise and fully empathize with it.

As in the Cabo, you can taste a wide variety of seafood dishes, and of course, the inexpensive lobster. In Bahía Hondita there are only three hostels. Two with greater infrastructure development, with accommodation in rooms or chinchorros, and a smaller one of a more familiar type.
