Omar Ibn al Khattab Mosque is located in the municipality of Maicao,La Guajira, on 11th street with race 6. It was inaugurated on September 6, 1997,rising as the representative architectural construction of Islam in the country. It is the largest mosque in the entire Colombian territory and is positioned as one of the largest in Latin America. Built with marble brought from Italy, it has a 31 meter high minaret and a unique design that complements with beautiful engravings on its ceiling.
It represents a spiritual refuge for the Arab community that lives in this municipality,which, despite being far from their lands and culture or those of their ancestors,keeps alive their faith and devotion to their only God, known as Allah. The mosque Omar ibn al Khattab is one of the biggest tourist attractions found in Maicao,for natives and visitors. However,, it is the most respectable and sacred place for Muslims, where they raise their prayers and prayers to Allah five times a day.
Visitors are allowed, as long as it is not a time for prayer. Before entering the mosque, Men must wear long pants. Women must cover their body and hair with a cloak,which hey supply at the entrance.
