Riohacha is also known as the Phoenix of the Caribbean, a name that was given to the city for its ability to rebuild after the numerous pirate incursions and looting it experienced in the past. Riohacha is a hidden gem on the Caribbean coast, where you can experience the beautiful beaches in a quiet environment. In this city you can have a culinary experience; There are several delicious seafood restaurants, but also places of modern food. La Marina Avenue is a great place to buy souvenirs and the night is home to several bars and nightclubs.<\/p>\n

We recommend the express route of Asawaa to see some of the iconic places in Riohacha:<\/p>\n

The Cultural Center and the Gas Museum<\/h3>\n

Located next to the beach on Avenida de los Estudiantes (Carrera 15), it is an excellent place to start. It is a small but very educational place that explains the gas exploration process. The gas museum was sponsored by Chevron and Ecopetrol that are operating the gas fields on the coast near Riohacha. In addition, the museum also offers information on the history of Riohacha and its cultural traditions, for example. The Embarradores of the Riohacha Carnival.

The Riohacha pier and the Virgen de los Remedios<\/h3>\n

Gather your loved ones on a walk along the Riohacha pier. At the end of the pier you can find the statue that represents the Virgin of Remedies (also known as La Vieja Mello), the legend says that it saved the city from being devoured by the sea in 1663.<\/p>\n

“Identidad” Monument<\/h3>\n

Near where the pier begins, you can see the 9 meter high statue, “Identity”, which shows on a wave the many faces of La Guajira, including several key historical figures such as: Luis Antonio “El Negro” Robles, Almirante Jos\u00e9 Prudencio Padilla and Francisco El Hombre.<\/p>\n

“Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de los Remedios” Cathedral<\/h3>\n

The main church of Riohacha is located on the second street, just behind the National Bank office building. It is a Catholic church that was built in 1852. It is a great place to rest spiritually during your stay in Riohacha.<\/p>\n

Gabo’s house<\/h3>\n

Not far from the church, if you follow the third street to the east, you will find the house (with the information plate on the wall) where Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez’s parents celebrated their honeymoon. The rumor says that it was in that house where they conceived the winner of the subsequent Nobel Prize.<\/p>\n

The sculpture “Mariposas Amarillas” and the Federman Park (Park of the Canyons)<\/h3>\n

A sculpture in honor of Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez and his magical realism is placed at the entrance of Federman Park. It is more a square where you can enjoy a rest in the shadows of the trees or sit in the canyons of the old fortress of the city and enjoy the view of the beach.<\/p>\n

“El P\u00fctchip\u00fc\u00fc” sculpture<\/h3>\n

To the east by the beach you reach the statue of “El P\u00fctchip\u00fc\u00fc” or “Palabrero”, as it is known in Spanish. The statue represents the figure (of the highest authority) in the Wayuu culture, whose function is to resolve conflicts through mediation and negotiation.<\/p>\n
