What to experience\/expect<\/h3>\n

Very few places around the world give you the opportunity to experience an open-pit coal mine, but in La Guajira, you can have a unique experience. The Cerrej\u00f3n mine has been operating since the 1980s and covers approximately 30,000 hectares of land distributed in several municipalities in the region and in recent years the mine has offered a tour within the mine for visitors. The tour has very affordable prices, it gives you a unique vision of the magnitude of the operations to be executed in one of the largest open-pit coal mines in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tour has 3 main points of interest:<\/h3>\n

First, the company’s mini-museum is shown at the entrance (where you can return at the end of the tour). In the museum, you receive a safety report and then you’ll move on a bus to go to the mine.
\nThe bus takes a route inside the mine and makes a stop at a viewing point where you leave and can see the current operation of the mine.
\nThe second bus stop is in a restored area where the recovery process is explained. In the end, the bus takes you to the entrance and to the museum.
\nThe tour lasts about 1-2 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Practical information<\/h3>\n

Due to the high level of security, it is important that you schedule your visit in advance through the official website:https:\/\/www.cerrejon.com\/index.php\/visita-cerrejon\/<\/a><\/em>
\nIn order to enter the mine, they are required to wear pants (not shorts or skirts) and closed shoes, for the top of a shirt is fine.
\nIn the case of children, they must be at least 12 years old or have a minimum height of 1.45 m (4’9 ”) to enter the mine.
\nThe mine entrance and the visitor center is located in the municipality of Albania (about 1 hour by car from Riohacha). At the entrance, the entrance fee is paid and there is also a shop where you can buy snacks and water.
